When to plant watermelon in Australia

Plant watermelon October to December in temperate climates (Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney); December to January in cool climates (Canberra, Hobart, Ballarat); October to December in subtropical climates (Brisbane, Gold Coast); September to November in tropical climates (Darwin, Cairns); October to December in arid climates (Alice Springs, Mildura).

Needs a long hot summer. In cooler climates, grow under plastic tunnels. Ripeness test: thump the fruit — hollow sound means ripe. Requires 3–4 months warm weather.
