How the calendar works
Built around your climate zone
Set your location once and the calendar works from your Australian climate zone, whether that is cool, temperate, subtropical, tropical or arid. A tomato sowing window in Hobart looks nothing like one in Darwin, and the calendar reflects that instead of averaging it away.
Separate sowing and harvest bands
Every crop shows sowing indoors, sowing direct or transplanting, and harvesting as distinct bands. You can see at a glance whether a crop such as capsicum needs a head start under cover or whether it can go straight into the bed, depending on your climate zone.
Aware of the season you are in
The calendar highlights where you are in the year, so the first thing you see is what can go in now and what is about to close. Southern hemisphere seasons are the default, so there is no mental conversion from northern hemisphere charts.
Ties into companion planting
Each crop links through to its plant page with companion planting notes, spacing and harvest indicators, so when you find a free window you can also see what pairs well with it. Basil alongside tomatoes, or carrots next to spring onions, are decisions you can make while you are already in the calendar.
Why this matters
Missing a planting window is the quietest way a season goes wrong. The seed packet says spring, but spring in Cairns and spring in Ballarat are two different growing situations, and a generic chart cannot tell you which one you are in.
Working from your climate zone gives you windows that make sense for your garden. Timing advice is always presented as a window rather than a fixed date, because soil temperature, frost and a warm or cool run of weather all move things around in any given year.
